Choosing the right roof color can be very daunting because you will have to live with your choice for a very long time. Here are a few things to consider when making that decision.

Choose dark or light

Your first and easiest choice should be whether you prefer a dark or light roof color. If you were in a warm climate, you could go for lighter shades, as they reflect sunlight and could help to keep the temperature in your home down. But in the colder climate of Snohomish, WA, we usually prefer dark colors to absorb heat helping to keep homes warm.

Choose a color that goes well with your house color

Use shingles to create a contrast with your walls. Gray or black shingles create a stately contrast with a yellow, white or blue house. Choose black, brown or gray shingles for yellow or red brick houses or coordinate a stone or earth colored vinyl exterior with a brown or tan roof. Alternatively, if you want a contrasting pop of color go for reddish-orange or lighter tan colors.

Choose a complimentary color

A color that is almost an exact match to your house exterior creates a boring monotone finish. Rather look for a roof color that will compliment your house. It’s a good idea to go to your local hardware store and put a sample of your wall color next to the roofing colors you are interested in. You will then be able to decide which one you prefer.

Simple is best

Having multiple colors or patterns on your roof can be overwhelming to look at so keep it simple. Keep in mind that if you are considering selling your house that you need pick a roof color that you love but which will also appeal to buyers. Choose a roof color that’s not only easy on the eyes but also adds character and appeal.
